FAQ

The Answers You Need

Can I share this study with family/friends/colleagues?

Yes please! If you know a male carer, please share this with as many people as possible. This will help to fill the study with really interesting and helpful data.

How do I take part?

Please use the contact details found at the bottom of the home page, or the chat function on the bottom right on the page.

Why does this research matter?

When examining existing literature, it is evident that the experiences of male carers are neglected, and not viewed independently from any other ‘group’ of carers. Male carers constitute 42% of all carers in the UK (CarersUK, 2019), however existing scholarship on care focuses on young and female carers, or carers of people with specific health conditions. Regarding men’s mental health and well being, there is no existing literature exploring the relationships between male caring roles and mental health. Indeed, some scholars make links between caring responsibilities and the effects on mental health for men as by-products of larger studies, however little is done to specifically investigate these links.

What methods are being used?

We are using a mixed qualitative approach called photo-elicitated interviews. This really just means that you take pictures that represent your experiences of being a carer, and then we use them to lead an interview about your experiences. Our interview will be very informal, much more of a chat and an opportunity for you to take the floor.

What do I have to do?

Take some photographs and collect any other photographs you wish to use that reflect your caring role. We will then get these developed for you and use them in an interview. The interview will be an informal platform for you to talk about anything you like, and I will just ask a few questions.
